AB InBev’s Startup Day Korea Targets Innovative Solutions To Create A New Ecommerce

Startups’ unique savoir-faire when helping big companies tackle their pain points and drive innovation became the main reason why AB InBev decided to organize a hackathon in a Startup Day format with BeMyApp in the autumn of 2019.

Innovative structures are necessary to revive big companies during a creativity slowdown period. Korean startups are gathering interest among government executives and are likely to be qualified as a growth engine, which can, by definition, help the issues, companies are facing nowadays.

The Dynamic Korean startup ecosystem

South Korea, well known as a fast, innovative country, relies on the growing startup ecosystem. We first noticed the new policies adopted by the existing Seoul metropolitan government regarding startups.

  • Seoul saw its co-working spaces increase in recent years. Providing startups with free coffee and wifi connexion, thus helping the exchange between innovators
  • Universities adjusted their curriculum to offer valuable talents to the ecosystem directly

Korea has made a deliberate effort to change an old economic system, based on its big conglomerates’ aristocracy, and turn it into a creative hub! Nevertheless, this political line is providing a significant resource of creativity for corporations.

AB InBev Korea marketing challenge: data & customer experience

Increased competitiveness; the issue is straightforward: how can companies refine their customer experience to convert them into faithful clients? In parallel, another challenge is being able to collect individual customer data efficiently. This considerable advantage allows a business to target their loyal consumers in a world oversaturated with ads.

11 Korean startups came to the Startup Day with their existing solution, and three of them reached the podium. The winning startup, Dailyshot, represented by Minwook Kim, won 4000$ and began a business partnership with AB InBev. Before the event, Dailyshot was a young innovative startup waiting for a scale-up opportunity to reach maturity. This waiting period is no more, thanks to this new win-win partnership.

The Korean startup ecosystem is a must-watch and a prime example of why international corporations should use startup hackathons to tackle their business challenges.
