Huawei Sweden’s Hackathon in Stockholm — Innovation driven by talented students
On Saturday, 3rd of December, some of the brightest computer science students across Sweden came to defend their school’s flag at the Hackathon organized by Huawei Sweden in the World Trade Center of Stockholm.
More than 230 students from 25 Universities and Schools across Sweden registered for the Challenge.
39 teams totaling 100 participants were strong enough to take part in the 5-day online qualification phase, which took place from the 25th to the 29th of November.
Out of those 39 teams 14 advanced to the final stage — an overnight Hackathon in Stockholm, Sweden from the 3rd to the 4th of December.
More than 30 innovative computer science students from all over Sweden arrived to participate in the 24h Hackathon, which commenced the night of the 3rd of December — a night of computer science innovation.
The challenge? Design an efficient real-time scheduler for #5G network. Teams had 24 hours to prove that their solution was the best!
After a warm welcome from the Huawei Sweden team, the Opening Ceremony started at 6 p.m. with inspirational speeches from Wang Yon — President of Huawei Sweden Research Center, Peter Lundin — Vice President of Huawei Sweden Research center and Teres Lindberg — Member of Parliament, Deputy Chair Committee on Transport and Communication.
Zeinab Bakshi, MDH, PhD — 1st Prize winner of last year’s Hackathon inspired students for this year’s Hackathon with her warm welcoming words.
The challenge was announced by technical expert Hamid Faragardi, Mentor leader, HPC Embedded Expert at Huawei Sweden Research Center. The goal of the challenge? Inventing a Faster, Simpler, Smarter real-time scheduler for #5G network.
After a welcoming dinner, students went straight to the coding rooms and started the challenge, without wasting any precious time. Throughout the whole process, they were accompanied by Huawei’s mentors — Maxym Kuzyshyn, Andreas Hansson, Wang Qin, Karl Gafvert, Jorge Garrido Balaguer and mentor leader — Hamid Faragardi. They were supporting participants during the Hackathon with their professional expertise.
On the 4th of December at 11h30, the tasks were submitted! From the 14 teams who participated, 6 teams with the highest accuracy scores got to the final. The final 6 teams got the opportunity to pitch their solution in front of the jury and the audience.
The final 6 teams only had an hour to prepare the pitch presentation, once the hour was done it was show time. The jury included, Mark Smith — Professor, KTH; Yi Wang — Professor, Uppsala University; Cyrille Artho — Associate Professor, KTH; Hossein Fotouhi — Assistant Professor, Mälardalens högskola (MDH), Caichao Li — Lab Director, Huawei; Jonas Lundstedt — Lab director, Huawei; Ali Hamidian — Lab Director, Huawei.
As a special guest, Sichao Li, ISP Channel Manager Huawei Nordic & Baltic gave an informative presentation to students on ICT Huawei Academy, which provides students with unique opportunities.
After a final examination and discussion, the 3 final winners who came up with the best solutions, were announced:
